Dr. Arthur Rogers founded Roger’s Memorial Hospital in 1907 with a mission of being the primary resource for individuals suffering with mental health problems. Today, the hospital, located in Oconomowoc, has grown from that first hospital location to a health system with five Wisconsin locations.

Last year, the hospital served more than 8,500 families and delivered more than 120,000 days of care in the community.

“Our success is measured by the number of people we are able to serve,” said Paul Mueller, chief executive officer. “One in every four people will struggle with a mental health issue at some point in their lives. It’s not something that’s uncommon. A lot of people can relate and there is a definite need in the community.”

Nearly 60 percent of Roger’s Memorial Hospital patients are from the greater Waukesha area, and at least 1,000 people came in 2012 from outside of the area to benefit from care provided at the hospital.

Day treatment, outpatient therapy, and specialized residential treatments are provided at the hospital, Mueller said.

The hospital campus is home to centers for the treatment of addiction, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder and the Child & Adolescent Residential Treatment Center. A new center for the treatment of young adults with mood disorders is scheduled to open this year.

“Our success is driven by our staff and our ability to attract highly respected physicians and psychologists to our facilities,” Mueller said. “With the expertise on staff, we’re able to deliver quality, cost-effective care through 26 different programs that have developed out of community need.”

Mueller expects the success of the hospital to continue as the conversation surrounding mental health treatment as an important part of critical care continues to expand.

“I think we’ve got a good framework in place,” Mueller said. “If we continue to stay focused as the conversations around more robust and essential mental health benefits occur, we’re in a good position to continue to address the need for the community.”
