Melissa Karis loves reading, and usually gets wrapped up in murder mysteries. But she recently read a historical fiction novel that made her grateful for her bucolic childhood.

Karis, an audit manager at Vrakas CPAs + Advisors in Brookfield, just finished “All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr. The Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times bestseller follows the lives of two European children during World War II.

“It starts out centering around this younger girl named (Marie-Laure) and she just recently became blind and she’s coping with that,” Karis said. “The other part of the story revolves around this younger boy named Werner who lives in Germany. Marie, she has to flee Paris because Germany occupies it.”

“It makes you thankful for what you’ve got, but then also … it shows you how even if you’re going through a tough situation, no matter what the situation may be … it teaches you how to handle those situations and how to use what you have and develop personal skills to just adapt and to survive,” she said.
