Guiffre Brothers provides Indy 500 recovery vehicle
May 24, 2013 11:00 AM
When the carnage flies from high-speed collisions on the track during the Indianapolis 500 this Memorial Day weekend, Milwaukee-based Guiffre Brothers Cranes Inc. will be there to literally pick up the pieces.

For the third consecutive year, Giuffre Brothers Cranes has designed and constructed the “Official Indy 500 Recovery Vehicle,” a specialized, articulating boom truck to assure a fast, clean and safe response to incidents and accidents that occur during one of the world’s most watched sporting events.

“In racing and in television, a few seconds can be worth millions of dollars,” said Dominic Giuffre, vice president of Giuffre Brothers Cranes. “Most importantly, however, is the safety of the drivers and the public, and our specialized truck, unlike a conventional tow truck, provides the safest and most efficient way to deal with disabled vehicles during a race.”

Giuffre brothers Dominic and Frank are no strangers to the racing community. They have been actively involved in Indy-style racing for decades, both as team owners and race promoters at Wisconsin’s famous Milwaukee Mile racetrack.

“Racing flows in our blood, and can be traced back to the 1950’s when our Dad would work at racetracks,” said Dominic. “In 2011, when managers at Indy mentioned they wanted to develop a new high-tech recovery vehicle, one able to quickly reach out and safely evacuate a damaged car, it was only natural our team would be the one to design it, given our experience in the racing industry and our knowledge of cranes.”

Prior to 2011, Giuffre said, most United States racetracks used old-fashioned tow trucks to remove damaged and disabled vehicles from the track. Since Indy-style cars are towed by lifting them by a hook mounted near the center of the vehicle, the auto could easily bounce around, potentially creating a human safety hazard, more damage to the disabled vehicle or allow the dangling car to spill fluids like oil onto the track, creating a dangerous situation for the remaining drivers.

“Our design brings the old-fashioned wrecker into the 21st century,” said Giuffre. “Our plan was to design and build a special crane attached to a flat-bed truck that could lift, recover and clear a car from the track quicker and safer than the old version.”

Giuffre also noted another valuable trait. When the truck reaches the team’s garage, it can reach out and deposit the car directly on the floor inside the garage, rather than dropping it outside the garage door.

The Giuffre design team’s 2013 vehicle of choice is a combination Fassi hydraulic knuckle boom crane, mounted on a Freightliner M2 truck with an Allison automatic transmission and 20-foot flat bed.

Giuffre Brothers Cranes, which is celebrating its 50th year in business, is based in Milwaukee at 6635 S. 13th St. The company also has locations in Chicago, Salt Lake City, Phoenix and Palm Beach.

May 24, 2013 11:00 AM
Bayshore Town Center in Glendale announced the arrival of five new stores and two unique restaurants in the second half of 2013.

Within the next few months, Bayshore Town Center will also carry out the relocation of four current tenants.

The new tenants represent approximately 37,000 square feet of newly leased retail and restaurant space.

Sprecher’s will open its fourth location.

“We are very excited to bring Sprecher’s Pub to our namesake brewery’s home in Glendale,” said Kevin Lederer. “Sprecher Brewing is an icon in the Milwaukee area, particularly in the North Shore, and we always knew that we wanted to open a location here.”

State committee freezes UW tuition and kills rent-to-own exemption
May 24, 2013 11:00 AM
The Joint Finance Committee approved resolutions Thursday to freeze tuition at the University of Wisconsin System and to delete a provision in Gov. Scott Walker's budget that would have exempted rent-to-own businesses from the Wisconsin Consumer Act.

The six Senate GOP members joined with Democrats to remove the measure rent-to-own exemption, which critics said would have allowed rent-to-own companies to charge predatory interest rates on the poor.

Earlier in the day, the budget panel voted to reduce the GPR allocation to the University of Wisconsin System by more than $30 million annually, while freezing tuition and segregated fees and requiring the system to dip into its reserves disclosed in a recent state audit.

In total, the omnibus motion removed $183.8 million in GPR compared to the original budget proposal, leaving UW with a slight cut over its current base.

"Because of lack of forthrightness, because of a lack of honesty and openness, we find ourselves with an motion before us that is going to, one, establish a process where we have more oversight over the university," said Sen. Sheila Harsdorf (R-River Falls).

Fewer homeowners in region are underwater
May 23, 2013 11:00 AM
As a housing market continues to gradually recover from the collapse during the Great Recession, the percentage of homeowners in the metro Milwaukee area that are underwater (owe more on their home than it is worth) fell from 29.1 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012 to 28.2 percent in the first quarter of 2013, according to a new report from Seattle-based Zillow Inc., which tracks residential real estate values.

However, the Milwaukee area has a higher rate of underwater homeowners than the national rate of 25.4 percent, according to Zillow.

Another 18.2 percent of homeowners with mortgages, nationally, while not technically underwater likely do not have enough equity to afford to move, according to the report.
Among the largest metro area covered by Zillow, those with the highest underwater rate are: Las Vegas, 54.3 percent; Atlanta, 47.6 percent; Orlando, 41.8 percent; and Detroit, 40.1 percent.

In the metro Milwaukee area, Milwaukee County has the most underwater homeowners with 40.1 percent of mortgages in negative equity. Negative equity rates for the other counties include: Washington County, 18.5 percent; Waukesha County, 14.8 percent; Ozaukee County, 14.1 percent.

Zillow predicts the national negative equity rate will fall from 25.4 percent in the first quarter of 2013 to 23.5 percent by the first quarter of 2014. About 1.4 million homeowners will achieve positive equity during that time, according to the report. Most of those homeowners will be in the Los Angeles; Riverside, Calif.; and Phoenix areas.

U.S. Bank provides financing for Milwaukee housing project
May 23, 2013 11:00 AM
U.S. Bank is providing nearly $10 million in financing to help Heartland Housing Inc. develop a 37-unit family supportive housing project on a once vacant piece of land in northeast Milwaukee.

U.S. Bank’s commitment includes $9.6 million of federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) equity, which subsidizes the cost of the construction, allowing the housing units, which are located in the Harambee neighborhood, to be rented at below-market, affordable rates.

“Our shared commitment to empowering individuals so that they can meet their most basic needs makes a partnership with Heartland a natural fit,” said Rob Wasserman, senior vice president for U.S. Bancorp Community Development Corp. (USBCDC), the community development subsidiary of Minneapolis-based U.S. Bank that made the investment. “Heartland’s work is strengthening communities across the Midwest and around the world, and we look forward to partnering with them again in the future.”

Located at Center and Buffum Streets, the development will offer nine two-bedroom units, 18 three-bedroom units, and 10 four-bedroom units for homeless families and those at-risk of becoming homeless. The development will integrate affordable housing with a range of support services provided by Community Advocates, a Milwaukee-based nonprofit that has been providing a wide array of services to homeless and low-income families for the past 35 years. Construction is underway and will be completed by December 2013.

“Because the causes of poverty, injustice and lack of opportunity are interrelated and interlocking, it’s important that the services we provide for residents are similarly comprehensive and integrated,” said Michael Goldberg, executive director of Heartland Housing. “Partnering with Community Advocates allows us to provide high-quality, client-centered services. We’re grateful for U.S. Bank’s assistance in helping make this project a reality.”

Cambridge Major expands in Germantown
May 23, 2013 11:00 AM
Cambridge Major Laboratories Inc. has renovated its U.S. headquarters in Germantown.

The global pharmaceutical chemistry company’s investment in its existing 300,000-square-foot facility has increased manufacturing capacity by almost 40 percent and will create 30 jobs.

The project cost $11.5 million, with the help of a $500,000 Impact Fund Loan from Economic Development of Washington County, said Christian Tscheschlok, executive director of EDWC.

The company uses reactor lab suites in the production of various chemicals, Tscheschlok said.

“This project is operationalizing a fourth production suite that they had existing in their current footprint,” he said.

The Germantown Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient manufacturing facility was built in 2009 and the company invested $13 million in another reactor capacity expansion in 2012.

The expansion has been completed, production has started and the company has filled almost 20 of the 30 jobs, said Brian Scanlan, president and CEO of Cambridge.

Cambridge has more than 240 employees worldwide, 170 of whom are at the Germantown location.

“This facility build-out is a great example of our willingness to rapidly respond to market demand, turning what was once open space into a high quality pharmaceutical manufacturing facility staffed to meet the needs of our expanding customer base,” Scanlan said. “Working in partnership with EDWC was fundamental to our success, and we are committed to working together to create high quality jobs in the Washington County region where there is a talented workforce.”

The renovation, which includes new equipment and technology, will allow CML to continue to compete globally on cost, Tscheschlok said.

EDWC is awarding its Impact Fund loans to companies that are already established in Washington County and are helping to drive economic growth, he said.

“We see them as effectively a catalyst, a driver business in Washington County’s economy and exactly the kind of existing business we want to support,” Tscheschlok said. “We’re looking for those companies that have demonstrated some success and are requiring additional fuel to keep their growth going.”

EDWC has another $1 million remaining in its fund, which is allocated in the county’s capital budget.

“We continue to be impressed with CML and value the impact that they have in Washington County,” Tscheschlok said. “They are a testament that the biomedical industries are not just an emerging industry in Washington County, but a growing one.”

WEDC launches new business development website
May 23, 2013 11:00 AM
The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) today launched a new website, www.InWisconsin.com, to help new, growing and relocating businesses find available economic development resources.

InWisconsin.com is intended to serve several audiences. It features a searchable database (ConnectED) of programs, incentives and tools throughout the state that are available to existing Wisconsin business and entrepreneurs. It provides information to site selectors and other economic development professionals exploring business opportunities in the state.

In addition, the site helps Wisconsin’s more than 600 regional and community economic development organizations share information and co-market the state’s business climate through a self-service portal that provides access to In Wisconsin-branded marketing materials.

“InWisconsin.com promotes Wisconsin as a great place to start, locate and grow a business,” said Kelly Lietz, vice president of marketing for WEDC. “We’ve designed the site to connect business leaders and economic development professionals with the resources they need to maximize their business development efforts. Every page of our site includes a call to action, whether it is program information, economic development tools, or contact information for the specialist most qualified to assist with the inquiry.”

WEDC worked with the Wisconsin Economic Development Institute to include a cost comparison tool that allows site selection consultants and others to compare Wisconsin against competitor states using a variety of key data points. The site also includes current international market reports for 24 countries compiled by WEDC’s market development partners to assist Wisconsin companies in expanding their markets globally.

The new website contains more than 435 pages of business development information, organization news and press releases about Wisconsin business development activity; dozens of downloadable information resources; and 270 links to economic development partner organizations throughout the state. Built-in reporting will allow WEDC to capture, track and measure interest in business development opportunities in Wisconsin.

Nelson Schmidt, WEDC’s Milwaukee-based marketing agency, led the eight-month site development plan. The costs for developing the site, which included planning, design, research, copywriting, design and testing, were $450,000.

The WEDC also is referring companies to www.wisconsinbiz.com, a business development resource that was developed by BizTimes Media LLC.

"In a world of certain uncertainty, work models are changing for our clients and job seekers, and Manpower has the capability and vision to tailor solutions to their needs."

Market volatility is creating many challenges for employers including compressed cycles and margins, continual cost and pricing pressure, and increased competition. With the new multi-channel model, Manpower is introducing a market-based structure where a blended team of local branches, in-market client engagement teams and virtual recruiting and service delivery teams work in lockstep to create a robust service network. "Manpower's history of innovation began in the branch network, and it remains the heart of the innovative spirit of our company," said Perez. "Our local expertise and understanding of each market in combination with an expert client engagement team and an enhanced virtual network will benefit clients and job seekers with fast, high-quality employment matches."

Cranberry Growers launch consumer education campaign
May 23, 2013 12:00 PM
The United Cranberry Growers Cooperative (UCGC), based in Wausau, today launched Be Berry Aware, a new consumer education campaign to help consumers identify high-quality cranberry juices that pack the nutritional benefits.

According to the organization, most people know that cranberries have a multitude of health benefits, but many consumers do not know which cranberry juices actually have a significant amount of cranberry content.

Cranberries are heart healthy, promote urinary tract health, a rich source of antioxidants, a good source of dietary fiber, and contain no fat, no cholesterol and very little sodium. The campaign suggests consumers read the label for guidance. Cranberry juice should be the very first juice listed.

"Collectively polyphenols represent a 'fingerprint' of the cranberry fruit. Our innovative techniques provide information both quantitatively (how much of the compound is present) and qualitatively (what is the shape and complexity of the compound). This information is used for authenticity, standardization and efficacy evaluation of cranberry products," said Christian Krueger, a research scientist and CEO of Complete Phytochemical Solutions LLC, who performed the testing on the juice products.

For a list of the 10 healthiest cranberry juice products in the market, visit www.beberryaware.com.
