Read the Label, Motivated Employees Help Tailored Label Products Grow

Published June 23, 2006

Tailored Label Products Inc. president Mike Erwin attributes his company’s success to innovation and technological excellence.

The Menomonee Falls firm perpetually invests in the latest technology as a means to stay ahead of its competition.

Die-cut technology and digital-based printing contribute to the company’s technology, but the firm’s innovation shines in its ability to design most of the tools it needs and utilize them successfully.

“We focus on staying innovative and finding solutions for our clients,” Erwin said.

Tailored Label Products has about 300 clients world-wide and produces everything from scratch-off technologies to magnets and arm bands.

However, state-of-the-art technology is useless without a motivated staff to implement it, Erwin said.

Erwin buys his employees gift certificates, gas cards and movie tickets for reaching and surpassing monthly production goals. He also provides monthly recognition and quarterly profit sharing.

Erwin was brought in to manage the firm three years ago and is responsible for implementing the company’s employee recognition program. Under his leadership, Tailored Label Products increased its revenues to $7.4 million last year and expects to hit $9 million this year.

“The only restraint on what the company can do is the ability to execute all of our ideas because of resources and time,” Erwin said.

In the last 18 months, the company has expanded twice, each time adding about 4,000 square feet to its plant.

The company engaged in lean manufacturing and employee wellness programs long before they were business buzz words, Erwin said.

“Anticipation, enthusiasm and innovation are three of our pillars,” Erwin said. “My dream is to be a good leader. My employees’ enthusiasm is reflected in their work ethic.”
