The U.S. gross domestic product increased 2.8 percent during the fourth quarter of 2011, the U.S. Commerce Department said today. That is the largest increase in U.S. GDP since the second quarter of 2010, and an improvement on the 1.8 percent GDP growth in the third quarter of 2011.
For all of 2011, U.S. GDP was up 1.7 percent, down from a 3 percent increase for all of 2010.
The stock market reacted negatively to the GDP report, because most economists expected fourth quarter growth of 3 percent. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 73 points this morning.
The biggest local decliners this morning were Johnson Outdoors Inc. (down 98 cents to $18.21) and ManpowerGroup (down 67 cents to $41.54). The biggest local gainer was A.O. Smith Corp. (up $1.11 to $42.67).
