On the heels of thousands marching for immigration reform and workers’ rights over the weekend, Voces de la Frontera announced the introduction of a Milwaukee Common Council resolution supporting an economic boycott of Arizona boycott and the swift passage of comprehensive national immigration reform.
Milwaukee Alderman Jim Witkowiak said he will introduce the resolution today for immediate action Tuesday. The resolution calls for the City of Milwaukee to enact an economic boycott of Arizona-based companies, as well as all meetings and conferences that take place in the state until S.B. 1070 is repealed.
S.B. 1070 is the recently enacted Arizona state legislation that the Milwaukee resolution describes as dangerous due to its "vague or ill-defined terms describing those circumstances in which persons may be stopped, questioned or detained due to suspicion of undocumented status may result in serious risks to civil and human rights."
Christine Neumann-Ortiz, executive director of Voces de la Frontera said, "The recent events in Arizona have galvanized people all over America to respond as they did in 2006 when Wisconsin's own Congressman (James) Sensenbrenner proposed the same kind of draconian measures that are an affront to basic American democratic values. Indeed, the Arizona law goes even further by institutionalizing racial profiling."
