Business leaders call for improved mass transit in region

Several of southeastern Wisconsin's most prominent business leaders are calling for the creation of a regional transit authority to collect sales taxes to upgrade Milwaukee County's bus system and create a Kenosha-Racine-Milwaukee (KRM) commuter train.
The top executives of some of the region's largest corporations publicly stood by Gov. Jim Doyle today as he proposed the creation of the Southeastern Regional Transit Authority (SERTA). Creation of the SERTA would remove the funding burden for mass transit from the property tax rolls and instead add to the region's sales tax.
The executives said today that an effective mass transit system is vital for the region's economy.
However, given the political realities of 2010, the proposal may be on the clock.
