Employers bullish about fourth quarter

Most local employers expect their business to improve or remain the same in the fourth quarter, although few believe the recession is over, according to the latest employment forecasting survey by QPS Employment Group, a Brookfield-based staffing and recruiting firm.
According to the survey, 86 percent of employers in southeastern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois expect their business to improve or remain the same. However, 89 percent do not believe the recession is over.
Only 13 percent of the surveyed employers expect their businesses to decline in the fourth quarter.
"Local businesses seem to be stabilizing," said Dan McNulty, QPS executive vice president and chief operating officer. “QPS has had 12 weeks of positive growth, and we haven’t seen that since 2008. That’s a good sign that the economy is improving."
The top issues facing local companies are: the economy (84 percent); insurance costs (24 percent); material costs (18 percent); lack of skilled employees (15 percent); and overseas competition (12 percent).
