Sussex-based Quad/Graphics Inc. is laying off another 140 employees this week, as slow orders and economic conditions continue.
The cuts will be made from Quad’s national workforce, but most will be in Wisconsin, where it has its largest operations, said Claire Ho, a company spokesperson. The layoffs will be made in the company’s pre-press and QuadTech operations, she said.
Quad laid off about 550 employees across the nation in January. The pre-press department was largely spared from those cuts because it had high enough work levels, Ho said, but orders have slipped since then.
“There have been recent, unanticipated declines in page counts,” she said.
QuadTech sells automation and controls technology to print customers around the globe. As many of its customers are seeing slower sales, orders for new machinery and systems have slowed dramatically, Ho said.
“We’re experiencing a worldwide pullback,” she said. “(Printers) are pulling back on capital spending. We’re responding to the worldwide market.”
Quad is in the process of notifying the affected employees through one-on-one meetings this week, Ho said.
