La Causa Inc.'s board of directors announced today that Milwaukee native George Torres has been named the organization's new chief executive officer.
Torres has served as the director of the Department of Transportation & Public Works for Milwaukee County since 2003. He assumed his new position today.
Founded in 1972, La Causa is a bilingual, multicultural agency committed to providing comprehensive services that support healthy child and family development. La Causa offers a range of program services that include: an Early Education and Care Center for ages 4 weeks to 12 years of age; K5-8th Grade Bilingual Charter School, 24-hour 7 days a week Crisis Nursery and Respite Center, Family Resource Center, Social Services and Child Welfare programs.
"I am eager to develop relationships with business and community leaders that can further contribute to the success of this community. La Causa is committed to providing children and families with quality comprehensive services to nurture healthy family life and enhance community stabilities. I certainly want to focus my energy on our services to children and families making available the best resources that will ultimately benefit our community as a whole," Torres said.
"We selected Mr. Torres after an extensive national search that began in December of 2007. The executive search committee was made up of three board members and nine representatives from foundations, corporations and government. The process we went through made it very clear that George was the right person to lead La Causa. He has extensive leadership experience in the public and private sector as well as the academic area. In addition George was born and raised right in this area and he understands the opportunities and challenges facing this community," said board chairman Mike Falbo.
Torres will succeed Hugo Cardona, who will retire on June 30. Cardona and his wife, Gloria, moved to Milwaukee in 2004 and he committed to turn the organization around. In his five-years at the helm, Cardona erased the organization's $2.6 million deficit and secured funds for a $2.5 million school expansion that will be completed in June.
