Marquette University announced that a new office building on the corner of 12th Street and Wisconsin Avenue will be named in honor of Milwaukee real estate developer and philanthropist Joe Zilber and his wife, Vera.
Joe Zilber graduated from Marquette's College of Business Administration in 1939 and received his law degree from the Marquette University Law School in 1941.
A university-owned building on the site has been razed, and construction of a new four-story structure will begin soon.
In August 2007, Zilber announced gifts totaling $50 million to charities, organizations and institutions in Milwaukee, including a $30 million gift to the Marquette University Law School.
A four-floor open atrium at the center of the new Law School facility will be known as the Zilber Forum.
"Joe and Vera met at Marquette, and their backgrounds were influential in recognizing the critical need today's students have for financial assistance as they strive to take advantage of Marquette's rigorous legal education, steeped in the tradition of ethical leadership and service to others," Marquette president Robert Wild said. "While the Zilber gift directly benefitted the Law School, Joe's contributions to many Milwaukee institutions in the past year illustrate his broad concern for our community and the youth who are tomorrow's leaders. This new building will house various support services for our students."
The new Marquette office building will combine key student services - the offices of the bursar, registrar and student financial aid - into one central location for students.
"The centralization enhances the delivery and quality of service for our students," said Kathleen Bussanich, bursar. "Students will be better-served because one question from a student often leads to others beyond the scope of a single office. This way, students will be helped by one cross-trained representative."
The Office of Undergraduate Admissions and the new student services center will occupy the ground floor of the new building. The offices of Administration, General Counsel, Marketing and Communication, and the Registrar will be on the second floor. University Advancement will be housed on the third and fourth floors, with the offices of the president, senior vice president, provost, and Mission and Identity also on the fourth floor.
Occupancy of the new building is expected in January 2010.
