Web site serves up city restaurant inspection reports

A new City of Milwaukee Web site is offering the first-of-its-kind digital system that enables visitors to review health inspection records of city restaurants, food stores and other outlets that sell food.
The Food Establishment Inspection Reporting System has been designed by City of Milwaukee staff to be an easy-to-use, public records access website for citizens of Milwaukee, as well as for those visiting Milwaukee, according to Alderman Michael Murphy.
"The great thing about this new Web site is that it provides timely information on the current City of Milwaukee Health Department (MHD) codes compliance of any restaurant, tavern, or food store in the city," Murphy said. "So, if you have any questions about the cleanliness or condition of a particular city business selling food, you just go online and review the reports for yourself."
According to the Health Department, here's how the new system works: An MHD food inspector visits a food establishment and, using a tablet PC, enters his/her findings into a form to create a digital inspection report. The following business day, reports from all food inspectors using this technology are synchronized to the MHD's inspection database, and at the time of synchronization become accessible to the general public via the online search tools in the Inspection Reporting System web pages.
The search capabilities of the Food Establishment Inspection Reporting System (FEIRS) are flexible, providing the user with several different ways to search for the information they need. For example, users can search by aldermanic district, Zip Code, establishment name or establishment street address.
New records are being added daily.
"I commend the Health Department on this innovative use of technology to help citizens and visitors, and I strongly encourage Milwaukee citizens and others to visit the website to learn more about the food inspection process and to get updates on establishments that are of interest to them," Murphy said.
