Canal Street extension to open on Friday

The west end of Milwaukee's Canal Street will open Friday, enabling motorists to drive all the way from Sixth Street through the Menomonee River Valley to Miller Park.
The new thoroughfare will connect the east and west ends of the valley and help ease the traffic congestion caused by the Marquette Interchange reconstruction as the Milwaukee Brewers' season begins Monday, April 3.
Mayor Tom Barrett will preside over a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. Friday to commemorate the opening.
The Canal Street project resulted from intergovernmental and private business cooperation between the City of Milwaukee, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the Department of Natural Resources, the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, Menomonee Valley Partners Inc., C.P. Rail, and several other partners.
In addition to the roadway, the Canal Street project includes construction of segments of the Hank Aaron State Trail, which will open Aug. 12, a new roundabout and a bio-retention facility and stormwater lift station at the intersection of 25th and Canal Street.
