Local bank earns seat on national social media panel

North Shore Bank executive Tim Gluth, webmaster and eBusiness coordinator, will join executives from EBAY, Starbucks, Fiserv and other prominent financial organizations as a panelist at the Mobile Banking and Emerging Application’s Summit in early June.
The event will be held at the M Resort Casino and Spa in Las Vegas, June 6 through June 8.
Gluth will be speaking about the practical applications of social media for banks and other financial institutions and what it can do for other institutions and why it’s important to get into the game now.
“Overall (North Shore Bank is) participating in social media and social networking to engage people and better understand the people who live and work in our communities,” Gluth said. “We have always been a big part of the community physically and with social media we are able to bring those physical communities online.”
A big part of what North Shore Bank already does is listening to the people in its communities, Gluth said.
“Social networking sites allow us to expand our reach and gives us an easily accessible way for us to answer any questions people might have about anything,” Gluth said.
According to Gluth, social networking sites act as a door opening for customers or potential customers who may have banking or financial questions. Depending on the subject, the conversations could end up being taken offline, to a direct message or an email if it is related to specific account information or other private issues.
North Shore utilizes social media networks to promote events and happenings taking place in the community as well.
The bank has been an active participant on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Flickr, and most recently started using Foursquare.
“Last month we launched a promotion campaign to give a $5 subway card to the ‘Mayor’ of all of our bank branches,” Gluth said. “It was just another way for us to say thank you for stopping in. We plan to launch that campaign again in May, it’s a great way for us to encourage people to stop in and its nice because it kind of localizes each branch.”
The bank included its compliance department on conversations about social media practices from the beginning, Gluth said.
“We had an idea of what we wanted to do, and how we wanted to approach it and we included our compliance department in on those plans,” he said. “Because we are using it as a community awareness board to post event information, product and rate information they felt as if we were ok, but we do have guidelines and procedures in place that we must follow.”
The guidelines and procedures aren’t any different than ones the bank already has in place, Gluth said. They’ve just been adapted to fit the realm of social media.
“It’s how people are communicating now, and its where people in our communities are spending their time,” Gluth said. “It’s another are for us to let people know we’re out there and we are listening, another way for us to be a part of the community.”

Milwaukee gets “UnGeeked” at social media event

SohoBiztube.com will present UnGeeked Elite: A Social Media & Marketing Forum, a three-day professional event on Thursday, May 13 through Saturday, May 15 at the University Club in Milwaukee. Eight nationally known speakers will join local social media enthusiasts to highlight the event.
“I’ve been in the Milwaukee community a long time, and have spent the last 12 years as an entrepreneur here,” said Cd Vann, founder of UnGeeked Elite. “I’m very passionate about social media and what it can do to promote the corporate brand. I decided that I wanted to bring a national event to Milwaukee as a way to give back to our community.” The three day event will feature keynotes from nationally and internationally known authors and speakers including:
Olivier Blanchard – Marketing and branding strategist, BrandBuilder Marketing and Red Chair Group
Jason Falls – Marketing and PR strategist, social media explorer
Dan Schawbel – Personal branding guru, author, Business Week columnist
Sally Hogshead – Best-selling author of "Fascinate," marketing consultant and CBS and NYT opt-in
Visible Technologies – Social media monitoring and CRM
Chris Brogan – Social media guru and best-selling author of "Trust Agents"
Hubspot – National leader in inbound and outbound marketing software applications
Scott Stratten – Viral marketing guru and author of soon to be released, "Stop Marketing and Start Engaging"
Local panelists and social media “mavens” will supplement the keynote events with seminars that will cover topics including positioning your internal and external brand, managing inbound and outbound marketing efforts; facilitating online customer relationships, building strategic public relations campaigns and monitoring social trends among clients and customers.
According to Vann, “Ungeeked” is an “unplugged” even that will feature minimal slide presentations, and will encourage audience involvement and participation.
“The attendees will have an opportunity to talk with, rather than being presented to by these social media A-listers,” Vann said. “These presenters have agreed to speak at this event knowing that I want the audience to take the mic and interact with them. It’s an opportunity for our presenters and for our attendees because lets face it, how often are you really going to get a chance to talk to these people in virtually a face to face atmosphere.”
The first 100 people to register for the event will also receive the added value of participating in an exclusive 20-on-1 private consultation session with the keynote of their choice.
“The 20-on-1 experience is usually unheard of, but its an additional added value for our attendees, and it gives them an opportunity for even more personal one on one conversations with the presenters,” Vann said.
Cost to attend is $250 per person for one day of the event. Early Bird Registration has been extended until Wednesday, May 12 and allows attendees to attend all three days for $550. Registration includes breakfast, lunch and books by all the authors. According to Vann, tickets for the virtual portion of the event will be available beginning Monday, May 10 for $99 a day or $199 for all three days. More information and online registration is available at http://budurl.com/UnGeekedMay2010.

Local restaurants face off in Food War challenge

Camera crews from The Travel Channel’s show Food Wars will be in Milwaukee Thursday, May 6 through Saturday, May 8 to film the face off between Milwaukee’s classic burger joint Sobelman’s and burger joint new-comer AJ Bombers. The show will determine which restaurant serves up the best “Milwaukee Burger.”
According to Joe Sorge, owner of AJ Bombers, the two restaurants will compete using the single burger straight off each of their menus. They will be judged on which burger tastes better when prepared with the chosen iconic Milwaukee burger toppings. Sorge is going to let fans submit topping choices for the burger. Dave Sobelman, owner of Sobelman's Pub and Grill said the officiall rules of the face off have yet to be determined, but he plans to, in his words, 'bring it on.'
"I've been doing this for over ten years," Sobelman said. "I told (Joe) when the competition was announced that he should do his thing, and I'll do mine and we'd see what happened."
Sobelman calls his burgers works of art.
"I think I have a better burger," Sobelman said. "The burgers here are beautiful. I always say that presentation is more than half the battle and the way we put our burgers together Picasso would be jealous. They really look and taste that good."

"It's the science of our burger that will prevail," Sorge said. "The perfect ratio of beef to toppings to bun... I can't wait for the showdown."
The crew will film one day at each location, and will choose a neutral third site for the taste off. That site has yet to be determined officially, but is rumored to be Milwaukee's Lakefront Brewery.
The restaurant that wins Food Wars gets the honor of listing Milwaukee’s best burger on their menu, exactly the way that it was prepared for the competition.  The Travel Channel hopes to air the Milwaukee episode within a month or so of shooting and expects to highlight much of the city of Milwaukee in the episode.

Marquette University Dean offers tips for college success in new book

Former associate dean for Student Academic Development at Marquette University, Bob Neuman, Phd recently wrote a book entitled "Are you Really Ready for College? A college Dean’s 12 secrets for Success- what high school students don’t know."
“My experience demonstrated that even those students with the best grades in high school often struggle in college because they aren’t prepared with the management and life skills necessary to juggle the greater demands of higher education,” said Neuman. Those high school students who say “my grades are good so I’ll make it,” quickly learn that college isn’t just about GPAs and ACT/SAT scores.”
In the book, Neuman shares with high school students 12 key strategies that will help them become better organized and avoid common ‘college student’ mistakes.  It’s a systematic approach that students should practice and incorporate into their high school years to strengthen their abilities. The book goes beyond micro skills like outlining and memorization tricks to help students learn how to be productive, take initiative, use resources, manage themselves and their time, realistically assess progress, read warning signs, adjust to change, set and reach goals, and mark off academic milestones, he said.
Are You Really Ready for College? A College Dean’s 12 Secrets for Success – what high school students don’t know retails for $21.99 and is now available at www.areyoureallyreadyforcollege.com    It is a useful resource not just for students but for their support system including parents, high school counselors, teachers and other education advisers.

Glory becomes a regular guest at Harley Davidson Museum

The Harley-Davidson Museum recently kicked off a partnership with the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center that names “Glory the Bald Eagle” as the Museum’s new “feathered ambassador” and wildlife conservation educator. Glory will be on site at the Museum for Sunday Family Days starting May 2. Kids will get the chance to meet and interact with Glory and his handler during this raptor education meet-and-greet style program.
“We’re thrilled to have Glory joining the ranks of the Harley-Davidson Museum team,” said Museum program development manager Christina Kutsch. “We hope Glory becomes as synonymous with the Museum as Samson was with the Zoo.”
Glory is a nine-year-old, 12 pound male bald eagle that has been living at Schlitz Audubon Nature Center since he was six months old. As a fledgling, he was injured on one of his first flights from the nest and rescued by a canoeist on the Wisconsin River.
In addition to the opportunity to meet Glory between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., the Museum’s Sunday Family Day offers fun activities built just for kids to interact with the history, art, science and culture of motorcycles, America and Harley-Davidson. The day includes Story Time at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and the new Imagination Station gives kids a chance to dress up and pretend to ride their own bike, complete with sounds and lights. Books, cartoons and games round out the fun. Plus kids can get their favorite temporary tattoo and receive a special treat with their meal at Motor® Bar & Restaurant.
Glory will appear at the Museum most Sundays May 2 through November 7.

Marquette PT faculty receive programs highest honor

Three physical therapy professors in Marquette University’s College of Health Sciences have been honored by the American Physical Therapy Association. Dr. Lawrence Pan, chair and professor of physical therapy, was elected a Catherine Worthingham Fellow, the professional organization’s highest honor. Dr. Tina Stoeckmann, clinical associate professor, won the Dorothy Briggs Memorial Scientific Inquiry Award, and Dr. Guy Simoneau, professor, was selected as a recipient of the Lucy Blair Service Award.
Pan is being honored as a Worthingham Fellow for excellence in the APTA’s “domain of advocacy” for advancing the profession by improving ethnic and racial diversity within the profession, addressing disparities in health care delivery, and creating a culture of professional responsibility among PT students who raised funds to support physical therapy research.
Since 1992, Pan has received five federal Health Careers Opportunity Program grants, totaling $6.5 million, to address disparities in health care delivery by recruiting and training physical therapists from financially or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds.
“We are extremely proud of the many national awards garnered by our physical therapy faculty and students over recent years,” said Dr. William E. Cullinan, dean of the Marquette’s College of Health Sciences. “These awards highlight the principal reason why our physical therapy doctoral program maintains such elite national stature – our outstanding faculty.”
