APPLETON – Town of Union plan commission to consider contentious sand mine proposal

  
Town leaders are asking the community’s plan commission to weigh in before the board decides whether to approve a sand mine operation on the town’s eastern border.

A.F. Gelhar of Markesan has plans to purchase at least 190 acres for the extraction of silica sand to be used in metal casting factories in east-central Wisconsin. The proposal has upset many residents who fear the mine will spell trouble for the local environment and their own health.
