LA CROSSE - Council overrides mayor’s veto on Kwik Trip development

  
Mayor Matt Harter’s veto of the Kwik Trip Inc. development agreement lasted about 48 hours.

The La Crosse Common Council took about 15 minutes Thursday to restore the agreement that will repay some tax funds to Kwik Trip in return for a proposed $31.9 million dairy expansion.

Harter had vetoed the measure Tuesday to reinforce his opposition to providing public TIF funds for private development, though he has repeatedly stressed he favors other forms of TIF assistance such as infrastructure and site preparation.

Other council members countered the estimated $5 million to $10 million in increased tax base, at least 100 new jobs and other improvements makes the development a worthy investment that will benefit all city residents.
