MADISON - Developer seeks to build high-end apartments near Capitol

  
The Downtown Madison condo market may be sluggish, but high-end apartments are all the rage near Capitol Square.

In the latest proposal, developer Les Orosz wants to raze seven buildings to build a roughly $5 million, four-story, 58-unit apartment building with a 70-space underground parking garage and space to park 90 bicycles at the corner of South Bedford and West Doty streets in the Bassett neighborhood southwest of the Square.

The Bassett neighborhood has seen a major interest in high-end apartments, partly driven by demand from employees at booming Epic Systems in Verona who want to live in downtown Madison, said John Sutton, the developer's architect.

"Epic continues to hire young professionals and a huge percentage of these people want to live in the downtown area," Sutton said.
