GREEN BAY - Al's Hamburger Shop serving customers again after fire

Al's Hamburger Shop reopened Sunday morning, grilling burgers and dishing up corned beef hash eight months after the downtown Green Bay landmark was gutted by fire.

The 78-year-old restaurant at 131 S. Washington St. opened at 5 a.m. It sustained an estimated $50,000 in damage in the Aug. 20 fire, which was believed to have started near a gas grill in the front of the building.

The restaurant is owned by George Rank and his sons, Perry and Steve Rank. It was founded by George's father, Al Rank, in 1934. Judith Rank, who ran the restaurant with her husband and sons for 42 years, died last month.
