BROKAW - End of an era at Wausua Paper's Brokaw mill

More than a century of paper-making in Brokaw came to an end Friday when 310 Wausau Paper employees punched out for the final time after being permanently laid off. Wausau Paper is preparing to close the 112-year-old Brokaw paper mill after selling the company's printing and writing division to Neenah Paper Inc. of Alpharetta, Ga., for $21 million. "It was a sad day today. There were tears," Tom Weidman, who supervised one of the mill's paper-making machines, said Friday. Just 120 employees are left working at the mill to help clear out the remaining rolls of paper and begin the process of emptying and closing the facility, Wausau Paper spokesman Perry Grueber said. The remaining employees will be laid off as the workload diminishes.
