GREEN BAY - City OKs hotel tax hike for convention center expansion

By Daniel Burkwald

The Green Bay City Council voted Monday to support an increase in the tax paid by people renting hotel rooms, and agreed with Mayor Jim Schmitt that proceeds should be divided between two projects aimed at attracting more tourist dollars. Schmitt cast the tiebreaking vote in favor of increasing the Brown County hotel tax from 8 to 10 percent. The 7-6 vote supported a resolution to recommend that half the increase go to support the Greater Green Bay Convention & Visitors Bureau, and half fund a proposed expansion of the KI Convention Center downtown. The mayor, with Alderman Patrick Evans, has proposed a nearly $20 million expansion of the center, which is off Main Street on the northern edge of downtown. They say it is essential in bringing people downtown and keeping the region competitive with Appleton and other areas of the state.
