Recall organizers said they filed 20,600 signatures this morning calling for the recall of Wisconsin Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald (R.-Juneau), and the signatures to recall three other senators, as well as Gov. Scott Walker and Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch will be submitted this afternoon.
The Wisconsin State AFL-CIO said the 20,600 signatures calling for the recall of Fitzgerald exceeded the 16,700 required to force the recall election.
The signatures are being submitted to the Government Accountability Board (GAB) in Madison, which will begin the process of verification.
Fitzgerald said that if the signatures are found to be valid, "I will embrace the opportunity to run on my record and the accomplishments Senate Republicans have made over the past year."
Recall organizers say they will substantially exceed the 540,208 signatures needed to initiate a recall of Walker when those signatures are submitted at 3 p.m. today.
The total cost of recall elections for the state and municipalities may be more than $9 million, according to estimates from GAB officials.
Walker told AM 620-WTMJ this morning that the recall was "unfortunate" and "baseless," and he said his reforms are working for Wisconsin.
One Wisconsin Now executive director Scot Ross said, "In just one year, Gov. Scott Walker has failed the people of Wisconsin as no other elected official in our state has. Continuing job loss, while nationally the rest of the country gains jobs. The largest cuts to public education of our students in our state's history. More than 65,000 people including 29,000 children about to lose their health care. Radical attacks on the rights of Wisconsin workers and voters. And to top it off, an unconscionable $70 million hike on taxes for seniors and the working poor, while Walker signed $2.3 billion in new tax breaks for corporations and the rich. Walker tore Wisconsin apart, but the people of Wisconsin will put us back together."
