King’s legacy celebrated today

By Jim Butman

To commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. Inc. employees are volunteering in a day of service today, supporting organizations across the greater Milwaukee area that align with King's mission to alleviate poverty, build community and foster social change.

The organizations to be helped by the volunteers today include the YMCA, the Milwaukee Rescue Mission and the Sojourner Truth House Family Peace Center.

Employees will have the opportunity to participate in company-sponsored activities organized by Northwestern Mutual's African-American Employee Resource Group in partnership with Mutual Friends, the company's community service club. More than 1,000 Northwestern Mutual employees donate 30,000 hours each year to community volunteer efforts through group activities, mentoring, charity drives, and service on nonprofit boards.

The slain civil rights leader is being honored by observances throughout the nation today. Among King's many quotes cited with historical context today: "We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools."

President Barack Obama and his family planned to honor King's legacy by participating in a public service project at Browne Education Campus in Washington, D.C., today and will travel to the Kennedy Center for the Let Freedom Ring celebration.

The Marquette University Golden Eagles will honor King by playing a matinee basketball game today at home against the Louisville Cardinals, beginning at 2:30 p.m.

The stock market and most government offices were closed today in observance of the holiday.
