American Airlines parent company files for bankruptcy

By Jim Butman

The Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing by American Airlines parent AMR Corp.  will have little to no immediate impact on flights, tickets and reservations, the company said today.

American Airlines and American Eagle are operating normal flight schedules, and their reservations, customer service, AAdvantage program, Admirals Clubs and all other operations "are conducting business as usual" today, the company said.

"Throughout the restructuring process, as always, our customers remain our top priority, and they can continue to depend on us for the safe, reliable travel and high-quality service they know and expect from us," AMR chief executive officer Thomas Horton said.

American Airlines continues to serve passengers flying to and from Milwaukee's General Mitchell International Airport.

Fort Worth, Texas-based AMR said it filed for bankruptcy to achieve a cost and debt structure that is competitive in the airline industry.
