A federal appeals court in Cincinnati today upheld President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act, ruling that that health care reform law is constitutional.
The law was approved by Congress last year and ruled constitutional by a district court.
At stake was the law's requirement for most Americans to carry health insurance or pay a penalty.
With a 2-to-1 vote, the three-judge panel ruled that the mandated insurance requirement was constitutional and did not exceed Congressional power under the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution.
"Congress had a rational basis for concluding that the minimum coverage provision is essential to the Affordable Care Act's larger reforms to the national markets in health care delivery and health insurance," Judge Boyce Martin wrote.
The opinion upheld a district-court ruling that also found the law constitutional.
