The number of Wisconsin residents filing first-time claims for unemployment insurance dropped to 11,294 last week, its lowest weekly total since Sept. 27, 2008, when 9,844 filed first-time claims, according to the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development.
Last week's state total is down from 11,345 in the prior week and from 16,055 in the comparable week a year ago.
Wisconsin continues to recover from the Great Recession more quickly than the nation as a whole.
Wisconsin's unemployment rate was 7.9 percent in August on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to the Department of Workforce Development. The national seasonally adjusted unemployment rate is 9.6 percent.
