The Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted early and then recovered most of those losses, teetering just north of the 10,000 mark this morning.
Investors had little reason to celebrate today, as sales of new homes in the United States fell to an all-time record low in July, as demand from consumers declined when tax breaks for homebuyers expired.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Commerce Department reported that orders for durable goods climbed a meager 0.3 percent in July.
Local stocks in the BizTimes Stock Index hovered around the break-even mark this morning. The largest local gainers this morning were A.O. Smith Corp. (up 60 cents to $51.07) and Kohl's Corp. (up 56 cents to $46.77). The largest local decliners this morning were Joy Global Inc. (down $1.79 to $54.59) and Bucyrus International Inc. (down 90 cents to $54.37).
