Congress extends unemployment benefits

By Jim Butman

The U.S. House of Representatives today approved an emergency extension of unemployment insurance benefits to about 2.5 million Americans who had lost their benefits in recent weeks.

The House voted 272 to 152 to approve legislation to retroactively pay for some extended federal unemployment-insurance benefits through the end of November at a cost of about $34 billion.

The Senate had approved its version of the bill on Wednesday.

Many Republicans opposed extending the benefits without using federal stimulus funds or making offset cuts in the budget.

Democrats criticized Republicans for opposing extending benefits for the unemployed while supporting tax cuts for the wealthy.
