Summerfest chooses Eppstein Uhen to redesign south end

By Jim Butman

Milwaukee World Festival Inc. announced today the selection of Eppstein Uhen Architects of Milwaukee as the design firm for a redevelopment project consisting of 22 acres on the south end of the Henry Maier Festival Park.

"We appreciate the innovative ideas that came forth in this process and are excited to be moving forward with Eppstein Uhen. We believe they will help us accomplish our goals of redesigning and renovating this area to create a world-class environment that will be relevant for future generations," said Don Smiley, president and chief executive officer of Milwaukee World Festival Inc., which operates Milwaukee's Summerfest.

Last week, BizTimes Milwaukee reported that the company had narrowed the field for the architect for the project to four finalists, three of whom were based in southeastern Wisconsin.

The design competition included submission of proposed design concepts and presentations to a panel of Milwaukee World Festival Inc. officials.

"We're thrilled to be selected as the architect because Summerfest and the Ethnic Festivals are such a vital part of our community and our culture. To be able to play a role in transforming the south end experience is very special to us," said Greg Uhen,  president of Eppstein Uhen Architects.

"All of the firms that participated were very talented. However, after considering all of the proposals and ideas, we found Eppstein Uhen most clearly demonstrated the needed expertise and creativity called for in this initiative," said Dan Minahan, chairman of the board of Milwaukee World Festival Inc.

The scope of the project will not include renovating the Marcus Amphitheater. This selection is subject to the successful completion of contract negotiations between the parties.
