Cell phone companies slashing rates

By Jim Butman

The price war among cell phone companies continued to heat up today, as U.S. Cellular announced new unlimited national calling plans.

Beginning today, new and existing U.S. Cellular customers can sign up for the Unlimited National Individual Plan and pay $69.99 a month for unlimited voice calls. Families can add additional lines for additional fees. Current customers can switch from other plans to the new plans without a contract extension.

"Our customers can combine the new calling plans with any of our unlimited messaging and data options and create the perfect plan to meet their individual needs," said Alan Ferber, executive vice president of operations for U.S. Cellular. "We want to provide more value to make saving simple for our customers and let them know that we have their backs."

Last week, Verizon Wireless and AT&T Inc. cut the prices of their calling plans. Beginning Monday, both Verizon and AT&T began offering new plans for $69.99 per month for unlimited talk or $89.99 for a plan with unlimited calls and texts.

Verizon's unlimited voice plan for individuals was $99.99, with unlimited text and video messages costing $119.99. AT&T is cutting the price of its unlimited voice plans from $99.99 a month.

Sprint sells a package of unlimited calls, data and messaging for $99.99.
