Blizzard pounds Wisconsin, but spares Milwaukee County

By Jim Butman

Most of Milwaukee County was spared the blizzard that prompted Gov. Jim Doyle to declare a state of emergency and close state government offices and most University of Wisconsin campuses today.

Commuters from western and northern suburban counties which sustained six to twelve inches of snow, were shocked as they drove this morning into Milwaukee, where green grass was still visible on the ground

Most of the state will continue shoveling out from the mess today, as winds are expected to exceed 50 mph, and temperatures are expected to drop to near zero tonight.

"Wisconsin's emergency workers are working hard to keep people safe," Doyle said. "State offices are closed for business to ensure we are keeping people off the roads and allowing emergency response crews to do their jobs."

The governor's order directs that state employees are not to report to work unless their job duties include the provision or support of an emergency response, public health or public safety function, and their absence would compromise delivery of essential public health, public safety, or emergency response functions that are required to continue despite weather conditions.

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and UW-Superior were exempted from the governor's order this morning based on local weather conditions.

Doyle declared a state of emergency for all 72 counties Tuesday night.

Weather conditions will continue to be updated at WISN.com, a media partner of BizTimes Milwaukee.
