The Wisconsin State Fair Park Board of Directors today issued an urgent request for immediate proposals from "any established promoters with a history of experience in the automotive racing industry" to operate the Milwaukee Mile racetrack at State Fair Park in West Allis.
The Fair Park Board obtained approval and authorization from Claude Napier, the manager, president and chief executive officer of Wisconsin Motorsports LLC, the current promoter of the track, to meet with and review proposals for The Milwaukee Mile.
"We appreciate Mr. Napier's passion and personal investment in his efforts to keep major racing at The Milwaukee Mile," said Fair Park Board chairwoman Susan Crane. "The Fair Park Board will continue to make every effort to secure a new promoter to continue the tradition of racing at The Milwaukee Mile."
Napier said Wisconsin Motorsports LLC "made every effort" to produce the 2009 racing season at The Mile.
"We wanted to honor the tickets of those who purchased over $1.0 million in tickets for the races this summer, do our best to repair relationships with vendors that were shorted, and create a positive experience for our sponsors and fans," Napier stated in a conversation with Crane. "We achieved many of our goals, but we also experienced a shortfall making it impossible for us to continue operations.."
Napier stated a willingness to work with the Fair Park Board to help save racing at The Milwaukee Mile.
The Fair Park Board will meet with qualified individuals or groups interested in becoming the promoters of The Milwaukee Mile. Time is of the essence because sanctioning bodies are already developing schedules for the 2010 race season. Those interested should immediately contact the Fair Park's interim executive director Craig Barkelar at (414) 266-7011 or Craig.Barkelar@wisconsin.gov.
The Milwaukee Mile, established in 1903, is the oldest operating racetrack in the United States.
