The Village of Shorewood is seeking ways to improve the community's business district, despite the current economy.
Shorewood's Community Development Authority (CDA), which is responsible for strengthening the long-term economic viability of the village, is requesting proposals from organizations that specialize in business recruitment and retention to provide the Village with a solid data base of business information.
Priorities include retaining current businesses and recruiting new businesses, increasing overall street activity and property values and providing goods and services desired by local shoppers.
"We need a data base that will provide market analysis and urban shopping trends as well as current costs of doing business in the Village to support and enhance our improvement efforts," said CDA chair Pete Petrie.
"We want to be able to hit the ground running as the economy improves," said Village Manager Chris Swartz. "We are also looking for businesses that are currently strong and may be looking to expand into areas like Shorewood, but we have to be able to provide those businesses with enough information to prove that it is worth their while."
Along with the CDA, the Shorewood Business Improvement District (BID) will be aiding the business recruitment organization with data collection and will ultimately be responsible for implementing most of the recommendations. Jim Plaisted, executive director of the BID, noted that it is important to have an organization from outside the village collect and organize the data.
"They will interview current business owners to tell the story about how great business is doing in Shorewood's central district. From those interviews, we will be able to tell a coherent 'retail story' to local, regional, and national retailers that we would like to attract," Plaisted said.
