Second Harvest needs help

By Jim Butman

Milwaukee's anonymous donor came through again this year for America's Second Harvest of Wisconsin, which is under severe strains to meet the growing demands for food in the recession.

The organization has received an anonymous $75,000 gift. Since 1983, Second Harvest has received an anonymous gift from the anonymous donor each year totaling, more than $2.2 million. The organization's demand for food is up 23 percent from last year, while food donations are currently at a 10-year low.

"This gift couldn't have come at a better time. Many people are struggling to provide enough food for their families. What better gift than the gift of food to help feed hungry people," said Bonnie Bellehumeur, president of America's Second Harvest of Wisconsin.

Families who rely on Second Harvest always feel an extra pinch in the pocketbook during the holidays because of the added expenses related to home heating, Bellehumeur said.

Forty-three percent of the families that rely on Second Harvest for food are already choosing between paying their utilities and buying groceries, she said.

"We are humbled and at the same time extremely grateful that this person recognizes this basic need for the less fortunate," Bellehumeur said.

People interested in making a donation to Second Harvest can log onto www.secondharvestwi.org and shop the online grocery store. Simply shop for the items you would like to donate and make a secure credit card contribution, and Second Harvest will purchase the items on the your behalf.

People wishing to make a traditional food donation can drop off their food items in the blue Second Harvest barrels at any Balistreri-owned Sendik's stores through the end of the year.
