Columbia St. Mary's cuts 74 jobs

By Jim Butman

Columbia St. Mary's Inc. has laid off 74 members of its staff in an effort to "sustain operational efficiency during tough economic times."

Employees affected by the layoffs were informed Monday.

"It's no secret that the U.S. is facing a tough economic downturn. The challenge is really affecting health care across the country and in our region as well," said CSM spokeswoman Kathy Schmitz.

The departing employees were provided severance packages, job search counseling, letters of reference and employee assistance counseling.

According to Schmitz, two of the layoffs took place at Columbia St. Mary's Mequon facility, and the rest were employed at the hospitals on Milwaukee's east side or at the system clinics.

"This decision, though difficult, will put Columbia St. Mary's in a position to weather this economic storm and continue our 160-year mission of providing safe, high-quality and cost-effective health care to this community," said Leo Brideau, president and chief executive officer Columbia St. Mary's.
