U.S. Cellular today is launching Mobile Broadband, enabling customers in southern Wisconsin to surf the Internet at DSL-like speeds and bring faster service and capabilities to customers through EVDO (Evolution-Data Optimized) technology.
"Mobile broadband works just like your DSL at home, but you can access applications and the Internet from your phone or your laptop 10 times faster than before," said Chris Rathsack, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in Wisconsin.
U.S. Cellular's new Mobile Broadband service allows customers to log onto the Internet without a "hot spot." Customers can use their wireless phone and laptop to surf the Web without having to search for a signal.
Mobile broadband, featuring 3G or third-generation technology, launched in Chicago, Rockford, Ill., northwestern Indiana, Tulsa, Okla., Des Moines, Iowa and southern Wisconsin in response to customer demand. More cities will follow in early 2009.
Due to the technology's increased capacity, data and voice usage can now happen at the same time. For example, customers using a data application will be notified of an incoming call. They can choose to answer the call and then resume the data application or let the call go to voicemail.
"With this great new service we want to give our customers the best experience possible when using their U.S. Cellular phones," Rathsack said. "Our customers told us which services and technology they needed to make meaningful connections and as always, we listened."
