Timothy Shields will leave his position as managing director of the Milwaukee Repertory Theater to accepted the position of managing director at McCarter Theatre of Princeton, N.J.
Shields will begin his new job Jan. 1.
During his tenure in Milwaukee, Shields helped build The Rep into one of the top regional theaters in the nation. Since his arrival in 1998, Shields led The Rep to new heights in season ticket holders, overall attendance and contributed funds.
McCarter Theatre, an hour away from New York City, will provide Shields a homecoming of sorts, as he worked previously at McCarter from 1983 to 1992 as business manager and general manager.
"Deciding to leave The Rep was very difficult. I've cherished the ten seasons of work that (Rep artistic director) Joe Hanreddy and I have been able to do together, and my professional partnership with Joe has been the highlight of my career. The opportunity to work in yet another high caliber regional theater - a Tony Award-winning regional theater - in such a great location was simply too alluring."
John Kordsmeier, The Rep's board president said, "The Rep continues to serve as a vital cultural cornerstone for southeastern Wisconsin and beyond. The pairing of a great theater with a superbly talented managing director for the past 10 years has allowed us to attain the highest levels of performance and professionalism. The trustees and I wish Tim great success in his new endeavor. This new opportunity allows him to make contributions to the art of theater in new ways, while at the same time affording The Rep an opportunity to invite a new managing director to join us and begin a process to lead The Rep to new and uncharted vistas of organizational distinction. We fully expect that The Rep's extraordinary reputation will attract a field of highly accomplished candidates."
