The Mequon Planning Commission on Monday night approved Marcus Theatres' planned upgrade to the North Shore Cinema located in Mequon.
The renovations will include adding a signature 68-foot-wide UltraScreen, a Zaffiro's family pizzeria, new seats in every auditorium and a redesigned lobby. Other features currently under consideration are a grand porte cochere covered entrance and an outdoor dining area.
"To enhance the movie-going experience for our patrons, we plan to reinvent the North Shore Cinema into an entirely new state-of-the-art theatre and entertainment complex," said Bruce Olson, president of Marcus Theatres. "We will offer Zaffiro's renowned thin-crust pizza along with an array of other taste-tempting Italian and American specialties in a separate restaurant off the lobby. In addition to our traditional favorite snacks moviegoers love, guests will also be able to enjoy popular brand names like Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream and Stone Creek Coffee, along with a variety of tasty sandwiches and appetizers in our new concession area. The upgrades will also include an entirely new lobby and cafe seating area surrounding a baby grand piano, providing relaxing entertainment. Although we are still in the preliminary planning stages, we anticipate construction could begin this fall."
To make way for the new amenities, one existing screen will be replaced by the Zaffiro's restaurant and kitchen, and a new auditorium will be built on the east side of the building to accommodate the addition of the UltraScreen.
The new North Shore Cinema will remain an 11-screen complex with digital sound in all auditoriums, but every auditorium will be updated with plush, adjustable-back memory foam seats. One auditorium will also feature Digital 3D technology, Olson said.
"This complex will truly be an entertainment destination. Not only will we show the best Hollywood films, but moviegoers will now be able to experience blockbusters on our popular UltraScreen," Olson said.
Marcus Theatres is a division of The Marcus Corp. of Milwaukee.
