The Wisconsin Department of Transportation will receive $1.5 million in federal funds to make additional improvements to the Milwaukee Intermodal Station.
Last year a $17 million renovation was completed to upgrade the station at 433 W. St. Paul Ave., in downtown Milwaukee. The project also added a bus terminal for Greyhound and other bus lines.
However, additional improvements are needed to the station's train shed. The new $1.5 million federal grant will be used to renovate the train shed and platforms immediately south of the station's main building, according to the office of senator Herb Kohl.
"These improvements to the Milwaukee Intermodal Station ensure the safety of the traveling public and encourage greater use," Kohl said in a news release. "The station's façade has become a welcoming gateway to the city. This funding will bring the interior of the facility up to date by renovating its platforms and other critical aspects."
The current train shed and platforms are run down and poorly illuminated. The platforms do not have tactile edge strips as required by current Americans with Disability Act regulations. The ramps do not meet current ADA regulations related to slope and landing requirements. The roof of the train shed is structurally deficient and has panels missing, which allows rain and snow to fall directly on passengers waiting on the platforms. The concrete on the train platforms is cracked and has settled significantly from horizontal, making platform use hazardous and unsafe.
