If the presidential election was held today, Barack Obama would win in Wisconsin, according to a new poll of likely voters in the state conducted by the University of Wisconsin Department of Political Science and WisPolitics.com.
Of 506 Wisconsin voters polled, 50 percent responded that they would vote for Obama, the presumed Democratic nominee, if the election was held today, and 37 percent said they would vote for presumed Republican nominee John McCain. Ten percent said they were undecided, and 3 percent declined to answer.
According to the poll, 64 percent said they had a "strongly favorable" or "somewhat favorable" opinion of Obama, while 53 percent said they had a "strongly favorable" or "somewhat favorable" opinion of McCain.
By contrast, 70 percent said they had a "strongly unfavorable" or "somewhat favorable" opinion of President George W. Bush.
The poll indicated that 80 percent of the respondents believe the United States is "on the wrong track,"
The respondents also were asked to rate the issues that should be priorities for the next president and Congress, with "improving the economy and protecting jobs" rated at the top (37 percent), followed by "getting out of Iraq" (11 percent) and "making health care and prescription drugs more affordable" (10 percent).
According to the poll, 57 percent said they had a "strongly favorable" or "somewhat favorable" impression of Wisconsin Gov. Gov. Jim Doyle.
The respondents said the top priority for the Wisconsin governor and legislature should be "improving the state's economy and protecting jobs (32 percent), followed by "holding the line on taxes and government spending (18 percent) and "improving education (10 percent).
