Muskego group seeks recalls after Wal-Mart vote

By Jim Butman

CRG Network's City of Muskego affiliate, Muskego First, has filed the necessary paperwork to create a political action committee (PAC) to explore the potential for recalling several local alderpersons who voted in favor of a new Wal-Mart Supercenter Store in Muskego.

Muskego First members say they are protesting the "underhanded manner" in which the local politicians handled the Wal-Mart proposal.

The PAC, named the Muskego Exploratory Recall Committee," was formed on Tuesday morning in anticipation of a Muskego Plan Commission meeting held later that evening. Approximately 250 local residents packed the committee room, with the majority expressing opposition to the Wal-Mart proposal. The meeting was culminated when authorities escorted attorney and union activist Ed Garvey from the meeting. Garvey was there advocating on behalf of residents opposed to the Wal-Mart plan.

The Muskego Plan Commission voted to approve Wal-Mart's plans to build a 156,400-square-foot retail center and grocery store along Moorland Road near College Avenue.

Jerald Hulbert was the only member of the commission to vote against the Wal-Mart.

"Wal-Mart has a pattern of locating its Supercenters wherever it can get the best deal from politicians and the least resistance from residents," said John Walters, one of the organizers of Muskego First. "But Wal-Mart dropped plans for Supercenters in 63 instances around the country in the past year, thanks to courageous government leaders and active citizens who took a stand and put their communities first. Let's make Muskego the Sixty-Fourth."

So far, Cudahy has resisted Wal-Mart's proposal to build a Supercenter at the former Iceport site at the southeast corner of Nicholson and Layton avenues.

The Cudahy Plan Commission rejected revised plans for a Wal-Mart, Milwaukee Wave soccer training academy and other retail buildings during a hearing on May 5.

However, the developers of the Cudahy plan are expected to continue pursuing that project.

The CRG (Citizens for Responsible Government) Network was formed with the grassroots uprising over the Milwaukee County pension scandal.
