MCFI forms alliance with TLS to save costs

By Jim Butman

The Milwaukee Center for Independence (MCFI) and Transitional Living Services (TLS) have joined forces, combining many of their administrative and support services.

The newly affiliated nonprofit agencies will have combined information service, finance, billing, human resources, marketing and fundraising departments. Those departments will work from MCFI's main office at 2020 W. Wells St., said Randy Fare, vice president of MCFI.

MCFI has about 240 employees, and TLS has about 170, Fare said. The alliance will result in the some reduction in employees in both agencies, achieved through attrition and retirement.

The combination is being made because of a request by Milwaukee County officials, who asked nonprofits in the county to consolidate for cost savings, Fare said.

"TLS and MCFI thought that they could provide better services by doing this," he said. "We anticipate (savings) could be $250,000 to $400,000 per year."

The combination of departments began last week, Fare said. Talks between the agencies started in early 2007.

MCFI provides assistance for children, adults and families with physical and mental disabilities. TLS is southeastern Wisconsin's largest private, nonprofit provider of community-based services for people with mental illness.
