DHL scrambles to deliver packages, as another storm approaches

By Jim Butman

Thousands of Milwaukee-area customers of DHL International Ltd. continue to wait for Christmas packages after the company's delivery service bogged down in the inclement weather this week.

Customers have formed long lines outside the DHL shipping hub on Milwaukee's south side at Edgerton Avenue and Sixth Street.

DHL said the recent snowstorms have hampered the processing of its peak season holiday shipments, and it is trying to catch up.

Late this morning, DHL spokesman Richard Gibbs issued the following statement to SBT: "DHL is running a 24-hour sort operation in Milwaukee to alleviate the peak season holiday backlog of shipments intended for delivery within the Greater Milwaukee area. Inclement weather impacted the processing of these peak season holiday shipments and local DHL staff is doing everything possible to return to normal operations. DHL gratefully appreciates the patience customers have shown so far and anticipates that the remaining packages at the facility should be delivered later this week. For customer convenience, DHL is requesting that customers call 800 CALL-DHL to confirm the whereabouts of their packages and provide contact information instead of coming to the Milwaukee service station to wait in line. DHL can then make arrangements for delivery or secure customer packages in a holding area at the service station and call those customers who prefer to pick up their shipments in person."

Meanwhile, weather forecasters say the Milwaukee area will be socked with another round of snow on Friday.

Several local companies, including Johnson Controls Inc., use DHL exclusively to deliver their packages.
