Kenosha Chrysler workers hit the picket lines

By Jim Butman

Thousands of Chrysler LLC autoworkers, including 800 in Kenosha, started to walk off the job this morning after the automaker and the United Auto Workers union failed to reach a tentative labor contract before a 10 a.m. deadline.

This will be the first United Auto Workers (UAW) strike against Chrysler since 1997.

The Kenosha News reported that members of UAW Local 72 promptly walked off the job and began forming picket lines after the deadline passed this morning.

Sources said the key issues of dispute between Chrysler and the UAW are health care and retirement benefits.

The UAW also walked out on strike at General Motors Corp. for two days before agreeing on a tentative contract on Set. 26. The union hasn't yet settled on terms of a new agreement with Ford Motor Co.
