By Jim Butman

The United Performing Arts Fund (UPAF) announced that Cristy Garcia-Thomas has been named president of the organization, which raises and provides primary operating support to 35 local organizations devoted to the arts.

Garcia-Thomas had served as vice president and publisher of the Specialty Media Division for Journal Sentinel Inc. since 2003. She succeeds Christine Harris at UPAF. Harris had served as president since 2002.

"The performing arts are a tremendous asset to the community, and Cristy's experience in strategic development, revenue growth and leadership throughout the community make her the ideal candidate to lead UPAF to even greater success in the future," said Thomas Ellis, who is chairman of the UPAF board of directors and is senior vice president of M&I Bank. "Based on her extensive knowledge in operations, sales, marketing and financial management, Cristy's skills will be critical to ensure the vitality of the performing arts community."

"The quality and diversity of the performing arts in Milwaukee make our city a great place to live and work," said Garcia-Thomas. "The prospect of serving as president of an organization that supports those performing arts groups proves to be an incredible opportunity to make a difference in our community."

The 2007 UPAF Campaign raised an unprecedented $10.5 million.
