Public invited to say goodbye to Goldmann's on Friday

By Jim Butman

After 111 years of business, the landmark Goldmann's store on Mitchell Street on Milwaukee's south side announced today it will close on Friday, a couple of days earlier than it had expected.

The public is invited to attend a goodbye ceremony from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle will present a proclamation to Goldmann's owners Milt Pivar and Jerry Lewis. Guests will be asked to sign in a "memory wall" to commemorate the business.

Located at 930 W. Mitchell St., Goldmann's opened in 1896, offering a one-of-a-kind shopping experience for the entire family. The store was known for its unique merchandise, ranging from size 10XL shirts and brassieres up to a size 56FF, as well as an old-fashioned lunch counter and vintage candy shop.

The end of the Goldmann's era will set the stage for revitalization on Mitchell Street, with Don Kim and DK USA Development Company Inc. planning to renovate the building and re-open in spring 2008. The building will retain the Goldmann's signage and the structure will be called the Goldmann's Building, which will be home to several retailers, as well as a Goldmann's museum, which will commemorate the iconic department store. The renovated structure will be part of the revitalization that is sweeping historic Mitchell Street.
