Mequon-Thiensville Chamber to honor businesses

By Jim Butman

The Mequon-Thiensville Chamber of Commerce has named Schmit Ford-Mercury as its 2007 Business of the Year and Worzella Photography Inc. as its 2007 Small Business of the Year.

Schmit Ford was started in 1912 in Port Washington, and Harry Schmit opened the current Thiensville dealership on Aug. 4, 1948.  The company employs 40 to 50 people and is actively involved in the community, supporting service groups such as Lions Club, both Rotary Clubs, American Legion, Family Fun, the Optimist Club and more. The dealership's donations helped to establish Schmit Field at Rotary Park and also provided batting cages for the Homestead High School baseball program.

Worzella Photography was founded in 1974 on Main Street in Thiensville by Chet and Marlene Worzella. The studio has been recognized by the Professional Photographers of America as one of the nation's top photography studios. Worzella Photography was purchased by Amy & Kyle Sterkenburg in January 2007 and is currently located on the corner of Mequon Road and 76th Street. Worzella's routinely donates portraits as auction items to many community organizations, including the chamber.

The chamber also named John and Helen Ward as its Citizens of the Year. They have volunteered their time for several community organizations.

The chamber also will give its Distinguished Service Award to Mequon Mayor Christine Nuernberg, who is serving her 10th year in office.

Meanwhile, the Town Center Committee of Mequon and Thiensville announced that Fiddleheads, Haus of Prime, Studio Café & Gallery, Allegro Martini and Eatery in Thiensville and the Town Center Mobil in Mequon have been selected to receive the fourth annual Town Center Awards.

All of this year's nominees and award recipients will be honored at the annual Celebrate Your Community Chamber Banquet on Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 6 p.m. at Shully's in Thiensville. The public is invited to attend the dinner for $35 per person. Additional information is available by calling (262) 512-9358.
