The Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) 2007 Senior Exhibition will open Friday, April 20, from 4 to 9 p.m., as part of Gallery Night.
The display will celebrate the creative excellence of 138 artists and designers representing the college's 11 bachelor of fine arts majors. The display will run through May 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays, at MIAD's campus, 273 E. Erie St., in Milwaukee's Historic Third Ward. Admission is free.
Among those anticipating this year's show is newly appointed MIAD president Neil Hoffman, who will visit the exhibition twice before starting his full-time duties June 1.
"I am honored to share in this public culmination of the intensive studies that have developed the talent of MIAD seniors and made them the coveted creative professionals our society and economy so desperately need," Hoffman said.
The content will range from an award-winning water transportation and filtration device for rural Africa to documentary photography of southwest Wisconsin's disappearing family farms, portraits of homeless and unsheltered men and women, a dress sculpture of clay tiles symbolizing African flags and a collaborative cookbook with original recipes for sufferers of Crohn's disease.
Many of the works at the MIAD 2007 Senior Exhibition will be for sale, and MIAD seniors will be present to talk about their work on Gallery Night.
The exhibit will include several portraits of Milwaukee's homeless people, as painted by artist Casey Davidge, who said she was inspired by their resiliency. Proceeds from the sale of her works will be given to the Hope House.
Graduating seniors will receive their degrees in commencement exercises on May 12. MIAD is Wisconsin's only college devoted exclusively to the education of artists and designers.
