AT&T will create 200 new jobs in downtown Milwaukee

AT&T Wisconsin announced it will create up to 200 new jobs in downtown Milwaukee to help the company launch U-verse TV, its new Internet-based video service.

AT&T has launched U-verse services in 11 markets across its footprint and expects to make it available in the Milwaukee area soon. The new jobs will be located at an AT&T facility at 804 N. Milwaukee St.

"The deployment of AT&T U-verse creates quality jobs and brings consumers a much needed alternative to local cable providers," said Scott VanderSanden, president of AT&T Wisconsin.

"AT&T U-verse will change the way Milwaukee consumers experience entertainment, and we're anticipating strong demand once we begin deploying it here," VanderSanden, said, "We already have a strong presence in Milwaukee with our call centers, and we look forward to bringing more consumer and economic benefits to the community with these new jobs."

Seth Rosen, regional vice president of the Communications Workers of America (CWA), which will represent most of the new employees, said, "As AT&T offers new services, it means more union jobs for communities like Milwauke."

AT&T's U-verse service ultimately will deliver a new portfolio of integrated digital TV, high-speed Internet and voice services. The company's new network platform, based on Internet Protocol (IP) technology, will enable a new level of service integration and features for the new U-verse communications and entertainment services.

State Sen. Jeff Plale (D-South Milwaukee), whose district includes the downtown facility, said, "More competition means jobs for union workers and benefits for Wisconsin consumers.

San Antonio, Texas-based AT&T Inc.expects the majority of the new Wisconsin employees will staff AT&T U-verse call centers, providing technical support to customers and field technicians.

A commercial launch of U-verse began last year in 11 metro markets in California (San Francisco/Oakland, San Jose/Santa Clara), Connecticut (Hartford, New Haven and Stamford), Indiana (Indianapolis, Muncie, Bloomington and Anderson) and Texas (San Antonio and Houston).
