Johnson Outdoors reports higher 1st qtr net loss

By Steven Burk

Racine based Johnson Outdoors Inc. today reported a first quarter net loss of $2.1 million, or 23 cents per diluted share, up compared to last year's first quarter net loss of $1.1 million or 12 cents per diluted share. The company had net sales of $71.7 million for the first quarter, which ended on Dec. 29, down one percent compared to its first quarter net sales of $72.6 million for the previous fiscal year.

The first quarter is historically slow for Johnson Outdoors, which designs, manufactures and markets watercraft, marine electronics, diving and outdoor equipment.

"We have set our sights on growing to a half billion dollars in revenue over the next few years, and on growing profits faster than sales," said Johnson Outdoors chairman and CEO Helen Johnson-Leipold. "We are dedicating more resources to creative marketing strategies to drive retail store traffic. It is far too early to predict the season, let alone the year, but we feel good about the potential to grow sales and capture share from the competition in the months ahead."
