Theater historian buys Times Cinema

Milwaukee theater historian and author Larry Widen is the new owner of the Times Cinema at 5906 W. Vliet St.
Widen, who co-authored "Silver Screens: A Pictorial History of Milwaukee's Movie Theaters," acquired the Times Cinema from Eric and Sue Levin, who have operated the Times since 1983. The Levins will remain involved in the cinema, and Eric Levin has been named its general manager.
Widen said he plans "to continue featuring the highest quality classic, independent and new release films while adding a variety of innovations intended to make the Times Cinema an exciting, new cultural and entertainment destination for the people of  southeastern Wisconsin."
The Times Cinema, which first opened in 1935, is one of the Milwaukee area's few remaining "art houses," most of which have been replaced by multiplexes.
"People who share a love for the movies will continue to enjoy coming to the Times Cinema," Widen said. "But the new Times Cinema will offer a variety of new features that will set a new standard for excellence in local entertainment."
